Help Your Neighbor. Help the Planet.
Let's come together in the spirit of neighborly giving on a global scale! Join us in the “Play for Trees'' Global Help Event. Revive 100 million trees and bushes together as a community and you will help preserve 1 million real trees in the majestic Lake Kariba ecosystem..
How do we protect trees?
Trees are protected when they remain standing! Local communities undertake sustainable activities to prevent trees from being cut down. There are many types of activities, but a few that standout in Lake Kariba are:
COMMUNITY GARDENS
A great way to increase agricultural production. Community gardens contribute significantly to food production. This reduces the pressure to cut down trees to expand farming land, and a way for the community to work together to improve their livelihoods.
BEEKEEPING
Bees add value to everything; especially forests! With beekeeping, local communities can tend to taking care of beehives, and with the honey the bees make, they can sell it in markets. A great way to make some money and keep some honey for breakfast or tea! Yumm!
SOCIAL FORESTRY
This activity allows local indigenous communities to recognize, mark and map trees that are most valuable to them. Mapping the trees highlights areas with non-timber trees that communities can consider for income generation, like fruit trees!
FIRE MANAGEMENT
During the dry season, fires are normal but have increased due to man-made fires. Fire breaks are made next to the roads to avoid the spread of fires. Sometimes, controlled fires are used as a preventative measure to keep damage at a minimum.

LAKE KARIBA SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL! I'D LOVE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT!
The majestic Lake Kariba region is an endangered and critical ecosystem stretching between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Kariba project is located in northwestern Zimbabwe and it covers a massive 785,000 hectares of forest. That’s 1,106,000 football fields!!! It also covers 250,000 hectares of community farm land. The Lake Kariba region also houses a wide range of biodiversity - 150 mammal, 504 bird, 133 reptile, and 274 butterfly species. In this region there are also three national parks and eight safari reserves. Anti-poaching initiatives have helped protect and increase local wildlife populations, including endangered and vulnerable species like elephants, cheetahs and hippos.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PROTECT FORESTS?
When there is too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth’s atmosphere, our planet can face challenges. In order to help our planet, we need to reduce CO2 emissions that are released in the atmosphere. Trees are amazing at this! They absorb and store carbon dioxide from the tips of their leaves, down to their deepest root. All of which helps regulate global climate temperatures. Now imagine what a forest with millions of trees can do! Forests are often cut down to make room for farms, or for valuable resources like timber or fuelwood. Creating new ways of growing food or making a living, we help keep forests standing with activities like beekeeping or community gardens.
HOW ABOUT PLANTING NEW TREES?
Planting new trees is still beneficial. Protecting full-grown, mature trees is more efficient and has more benefits.

HOW ABOUT PLANTING NEW TREES?
Planting new trees is still beneficial. Protecting full-grown, mature trees is more efficient and has more benefits. Bigger and taller trunks, mean higher carbon storage. Adult forests, like the Kariba Forest, protect plants and animals that call those trees home, while also preventing deforestation and land degradation. They’ve been doing this job already, and they’re pretty good at it!

HOW IS HAY DAY DOING THIS?
We joined forces with Compensate, a Finnish non-profit organization, focused on climate change, and whose mission is to empower everyone to make better energy consumption choices and offer easy access to high quality carbon capture. And in turn, help protect our planet. Through Compensate, we will purchase a large amount of “carbon credits”. Purchasing a carbon credit means giving funds to a project that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by either protecting existing forests from being cut down, like the project in Lake Kariba, or by planting trees. One carbon credit is equivalent to the removal of 1 tonne of carbon dioxide (1,000 kg CO2) from the atmosphere. For this project, we will purchase carbon credits that amount to protecting 1 MILLION trees!

WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT AND HOW DO WE MEASURE IT?
Everything we do – eating, shopping and moving about – releases carbon into the air, because it uses energy. This is often referred to as your carbon footprint. Everyone’s footprint varies based on habits, location, and personal choices. There are a few different ways to calculate your footprint, but the most widely used, takes into account 3 types: - Direct - such as cars and energy production. - Indirect - such as energy use, steam, heating, and cooling. - Others - such as logistics and traveling. By reducing our everyday footprint we can help to better our planet.
WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE THE PLANET A BETTER PLACE?
We all create unavoidable emissions in our everyday lives. The biggest carbon emissions in our daily lives can be: - How much electricity we use - How much we drive, fly and move around - The type of food we eat

MORE ABOUT COMPENSATE
Supercell has joined forces with climate nonprofit, Compensate, to take climate action together with the Hay Day community. >>Compensate<< is on a mission to combat climate change by offering everyone easy access to high quality carbon capture. The nonprofit empowers everyone to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than our activities create and uses 100% of compensation payments towards certified carbon credits.
